2011 Mossik JouJou Cabernet FrancWhite Rock Vineyard, Napa Valley
When it all began
The first red grapes picked from White Rock’s vineyard that year, the fruit tractored up to the winery mere minutes before 2011’s troublesome rains began. I set out to make the wine as naturally as possible - whole cluster, indigenous yeasts, and minimal machines (yay for feet and gravity). It was a protocol that would continue for all three vintages. While I ran wild with idealism, Christopher kept a watchful eye to ensure dogma would not be my downfall. It worked out pretty damn gloriously...
How it’s tasting nowExtended bottle aging may not be great for cashflow, but my god does it ever do wonders for the wine. Nervy and compelling with brooding aromas of wild plum, dry earth, sandalwood… somehow Nina Simone’s Love Me or Leave Me always comes to mind.
