Kahn Syrah Library Release

After much patient waiting, I'm honored to share these two Syrahs with you. Johanna and Jack Roberts (dear friends and vignerons of Keep Wines) lovingly farm the certified organic Kahn Vineyard originally planted in the 90s by the legendary Phil Coturri. Perched at the southernmost tip of the Mayacamas on the border of Napa and Sonoma, it's a jewel of a site with dynamic character from its volcanic soils and the San Pablo Bay's marine influence.

Extended bottle aging has been a boon to these wines – they are showing more complexity and seriousness than ever, with striking distinction between the two vintages that speaks to the very different growing seasons, yet preserves the commonality of place. Both are drinking amazingly right now and I'm excited for you to try them.

Thank you for joining Mossik's journey!

- Julia

2014 Mossik Kahn Vineyard Syrah Lovall Valley, Napa Valley - Mossik Cellars

2014 Mossik Kahn Vineyard Syrah Lovall Valley, Napa Valley

We have an old pomegranate tree at our house that produces the most incredible, deeply colored and vibrant fruit. Every fall as they ripen, it inspires me to make Persian pomegranate braised chicken. This is exactly the wine I want to drink with that. Syrah loves time in the bottle, and awesome dimensionality has unfolded in this one's near decade of development. Fruit is still pure and present, but now subdued a bit to let the savory, floral and herbaceous notes shine. Lighter and leaner than the 2015 ('14 was a pretty slow, steady and cool growing season), I love this wine with a little chill on it.

  • Pomegranate, green olive, juniper berry, dry cedar and a waft of saffron floral earthiness
  • 50% whole-cluster, open top fermentation. Élevage (14ish months) in very old, totally neutral burgundy barrels
  • 12.6% ABV

2015 Mossik Kahn Vineyard Syrah Lovall Valley, Napa Valley - Mossik Cellars

2015 Mossik Kahn Vineyard Syrah Lovall Valley, Napa Valley

In its younger years I didn't love this wine, I liked it and was proud of it, but stylistically preferred the higher-toned '14. The 2015 growing season was a warm one, and the fruit came in riper and a little more lush than my typical leanings. Apparently it just needed more time because damn was I ever blown away when opening up a bottle to re-taste before this release. What struck me most is its power and refined tannin structure, elements that weren't as apparent in its youth. Perhaps inspired by the cold snap lately, I want to be in a cozy cabin in the snow with this in my glass.

  • Blackberry, animal pelt, oil-cured olives, untoasted cumin seed, the slightest hint of lavender (coincidentally, the Kahn vineyard has an amazing adjacent lavender field)
  • 100% whole cluster, open-top fermentation. Élevage (12ish months) in 10+ year old Burgundy barrels
  • 13.2% ABV
